Adult marmosets usually give birth to twins, triplets or even quadruplets. Some pet owners pull out other baby marmoset for hand rearing if there are more than two newborns, or if the parents are not capable of rearing them.

Hand raising a baby marmoset is just like rearing a newborn human baby. Pet owners need to spend lots of time and attention caring for the little marmoset until such time when they are ready to be re-integrated with their parents.

How to Feed a Baby Marmoset

A baby marmoset needs certain types of food as they grow. Here's a guide on what and when to feed them different types of food:

What you'll need:

1 tsp of infant marmoset powder or a human baby milk powder (Enfamil)

5 tsp of boiled water

Procedure: Mix all the ingredients and feed the baby marmoset according to the guide below:

Week 1 - 0.5 to 1 ml for every 2 hours. Add-ons: add a pinch of Bio-vital/Kalmag

Week 2 - 1 to 3 ml for every 2 1/2 hours

Week 3 - 3 to 5 ml for every 3 hours. Add a little Nestum and a drop of Vitamin D3

Week 4 - 5 to 6 ml for every 3 to 5 hours. Need more Nestum and Vitamin D3 twice a week. Also, introduce live yogurt.

Weeks 5 to 9 - 6 to 8 ml for every 5 to 6 hours. Give him a bowl of Nestum and Yogurt and allow him to eat on his own.

Week 10 - 8 ml up 3 times a day. You can now introduce solid foods to your marmoset like mashed bananas, sweet potato and apple.

Feeding Notes:

Baby Marmosets are likely to experience constipation, especially during the first two weeks of their lives. If this is the case, add a drop of Mirracoat or Duphalac syrup. They can also experience sneezing. Give them Vitamin D3.

Week 1

Carry him around as much as possible. Just be careful since he is very fragile at this stage. Avoid exposing him to germs, different people and cold weather conditions.

Week 2

Allow him to have contacts with other monkeys. Keep him warm by carrying him on your shirt or by putting him on a heated box with a stuffed toy. Also, try to weigh and measure him weekly.

Week 3

Spend more time with your pet. Let him play around your thumb or you can place him on your head. Avoid leaving him alone for a long period of time.

Week 4

Constantly carry the baby, as they will become more mobile at this age. You can place him over your head where they will stay most of the time. Give him time to mingle with other monkeys. Allow him to sleep in a heated box with a soft toy where he can snuggle up.

Week 5 to 9

Continue introducing him to other monkeys, especially to his parents. Give him something he can play on like a branch of a tree.

Week 10 onwards

Baby marmosets can be weaned and may be put back with its parents.
